For funerals arranged through a funeral director in my local areas of Dundee, Perth, Angus and Fife, I charge “the going rate” which is £220-250 (as of September 2025).

For ceremonies further afield I will add travel costs – but I will always discuss what that might be.
However, as I increasingly work directly with families, and as I develop my practice to work with different forms of grief and loss including environmental losses, I am going to start using a “dana economy” way to charge. Dana is a term from Buddhism and it just means a generosity system: I won’t have set charges but instead will rely on the generous giving of those families and communities that I work with. A sort of “honesty box” approach. Of course, I will ask for my travel costs to be covered and any modest overnight stays that might be needed. And I can give examples of typical costs and how much time goes into preparing a ceremony.
But I want to start changing the model of “going rates” and instead find a way of charging that aligns with my own values and ideas.
